Teen pregnancy had became a huge trend in the United States in the last 10 years. It is also a very controversial subject and most Americans frown upon it. Teen pregnancy has been decreasing but is still about nine times higher than most industrialized nations (Steiger). Television has been raising awareness about teen pregnancy with their shows, such as Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant. Some say the shows "glamorize" teen pregnancy and encourage it among viewers. We think it is important to be educated on teen pregnancy because of the consequences. Studies show that teens who receive education about sex are 50% less likely to experience teen pregnancy (The Kid's Doctor). When a teen gets pregnant everything in her ilfe changes. Her grades change. Her social life changes. Most importantly, her relationships change. It is said that 8 out of 10 dads don't marry the mother of the child ("11 Facts About Teen Pregnany").
This topic interests us because since we are teenagers, it seems like a topic that can possibly happen to someone around us. We would like to raise awareness for teen pregnancy because we can see what a huge effect it has on people who have gone through it. We decided to take a survey of 188 students at Lakeland High School. According to our survey, 33% of the students say they are sexually active while 67% asy that they are not. Another intersting fact we found out was that 75% of high schoolers believe that pergnancy is more of a serious issue now than it was 20 years ago.
